Why is Alice in Wonderland?
Alice Hutson and her husband,
Don, have traveled Mexico from top to bottom, side to side for
many years. It began with their honeymoon in 19__ - well, a
long time ago! They both grew up in Texas, where the Mexican
culture interfaces naturally with that of English-speaking Americans.
Ever since that first trip to the interior of Mexico, they both
fell in love with the country and its people, who are warm,
friendly, and hospitable.
Back in the early years of their marriage while raising three
children, the family vacationed in various parts of the country,
often telling each other how nice it would be someday to retire
in Mexico.
On one of their travels, they visited Lake Chapala, Mexico's
largest lake, and were thoroughly captivated by the beauty,
the old world charm, the climate, and the people, who were friendly,
helpful, and welcoming. Brilliant and vivid bougainvilleas cascaded
over walls, every color of flower painted the landscape. Birds
they had never seen before sang in the mango trees and jacarandas.
The memory of the experience remained with them and the idea
of retiring to this paradise grew in their dreams. The north
shore of Lake Chapala, just thirty miles south of Guadalajara,
is the home of thousands of gringos, mostly from the U.S. and
Canada, who live in peaceful harmony with other thousands of
native Mexicans. The north shore is composed of a series of
small towns and villages with a laid-back atmosphere and a collective
attitude of unhurried living.
With an elevation of over 5,000 feet, the climate ranks among
the closest to perfect on the planet, requiring for most neither
air conditioning nor heat. It was here, in the village of Ajijic
(pronounced Ah-hee-HEEK) that they eventually retired many years
later. It was here that Alice resumed her career in real estate,
assisting both long-time residents and newly arrived retirees
in finding their perfect home in paradise.
When they lived in San Antonio, Texas, her hometown, Alice was
very much a part of the community, serving as President of the
San Antonio Writers Guild. During this time she wrote and published
"From Chalk to Bronze," a biography of the world famous
sculptress, Waldine Tauch. She also served as President and
was on the Board of Directors of the local chapter of the National
Society of Arts and Letters. She actively served as a member
of the Altrusa Club. She spoke on radio and television on the
many fundraising activities in which she participated.
Alice was a part of the real estate industry in San Antonio,
where she loved the challenge of matching people to their dream
house. It was there that she built a professional reputation
of integrity and honesty. She loves working with people and
showing houses, the perfect combination for success in real
estate. Bringing these traits with her when she and Don moved
to Mexico, she has conscientiously employed them to ensure that
her clients purchase and enjoy a house that is just right for
their needs and pleasure.
Central Mexico has become very attractive to many people in
the U.S. and Canada who are retired or who are about to reap
the rewards of retirement. The cost of living for a lifestyle
similar to "back home" is usually much more economical.
Indeed, many can enhance their lifestyle in Mexico and still
save money.Alice extends an invitation, in the vernacular of
Bob Barker, to "Come on downnnnn!"
and see for yourself. There are many beautiful and reasonably
priced hotels and B & B's from which the whole area is easily
accessible. As we say "welcome" South of The Border,
BIENVENIDOS A MEXICO…welcome to Alice's Wonderland!
